Time Warner will launch mobile WiMAX in Hawaii in 2010

Time Warner Cable said it will resell Clearwire's mobile WiMAX service in Hawaii early next year. A company spokesman told FierceWireless that Time Warner Cable also will launch service in Greensboro and Raleigh, N.C., by year-end. The markets join Dallas and Charlotte, N.C., which the cable vendor announced in late July.

Time Warner Cable spokesman Justin Venech said the carrier would launch service in Hawaii in the first quarter of 2010. The mobile WiMAX service is scheduled for Honolulu and Maui.

"We are excited to be bringing our customers the ability to take their Road Runner experience to more locations outside the home, adding the convenience of virtual mobility and speed with Road Runner Mobile," Nate Smith, the president of Oceanic Time Warner Cable, the Hawaiian Time Warner affiliate, told the Honolulu Advertiser.

Time Warner Cable has not disclosed mobile WiMAX pricing or product information, but Venech said that it will sell a Road Runner Mobile-branded laptop card. The service will be offered at a discount to customers who also buy the MSO's cable and fixed broadband services.

Time Warner Cable follows rival Comcast as a reseller of Clearwire's mobile WiMAX service. Both were among a group of investors--which included Intel, Google and Bright House Networks--that contributed $3.2 billion to Clearwire last year.
